Archie Wilson shares his picks and plays for the Round of 32 clash between Mexico and Ecuador.
Closing out Wednesday’s action, we have a feisty duel between host nation Mexico and an up and coming South American heavyweight, Ecuador. For Mexico, they have been one of the talks of the town, doing their nation proud so far and cruising into the knockout rounds. Ecuador, on the other hand, were expected to go about their business rather simply to end up here, but instead required a win against Germany to secure a Round of 32 berth on matchday three.
For Ecuador, they are at one of the biggest disadvantages possible, playing against Mexico in their home tournament, where their fans have been excellent. But if there is one country who might be able to counter that, it has to be Ecuador, whose fans have travelled like some of the best across the competition.
Then, when you look at their side on paper, I would argue they have more talent than Mexico and should be able to give them some trouble. However, the area they do lack in is attack, which has been their Achilles heel this tournament and almost saw them make an early exit.
So, if they can string together some solid passages of play ending in one or even two goals, I think Mexico might have a hard time challenging them.
