Tuesday morning at 7 am, one of the biggest games of this World Cup comes knocking, as a couple of giants of international football, from both a player and team standpoint, face off. Even better to rev up the heat on this battle is that Spain and Portugal are geographical neighbours with a long-standing history and a fierce sporting rivalry, particularly in the world game.
Diving into this one requires us to look at the recent form of both sides, and it would be fair to say neither of them have looked like the teams they would have wanted to be during this World Cup. But we are at the point in the tournament where the big boys come out to play, and it is less about having the perfect tactical plan and more about who makes the most of “the moments”.
To make the most of these moments, it takes quality players, and the headliners are the young and the old in this titanic battle. The names who will be under immense pressure to perform in this one are obviously Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal and Spanish starlet Lamine Yamal.
Both are a true joy to watch, but for me, this one comes down to the same recipe we have seen throughout this World Cup, which is whose premier talent rises to the top. Sitting here less than 24 hours out, it feels like a photo finish, but if you truly asked me who will be the side to get past the post, it is Lamine Yamal and Spain.
