Archie Wilson shares his picks and plays for the Round of 16 clash between Mexico and England.
England were very unconvincing last time out against DR Congo, who once again showed the blueprint for how to beat them. The only reason the African nation didn’t find themselves in the Round of 16, and missed out on the opportunity for a historic upset, was the Three Lions striker, Harry Kane.
When it comes to England’s struggles at this World Cup, they have generally had two answers to all of their problems, and that of course is either Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham bailing their teammates out of trouble.
In the Round of 16 against Mexico, while they will still need some heroics from their biggest stars, England will need to deliver a much more complete performance if they are going to keep singing Wonderwall with their fans.
Mexico have been a buzzsaw at this World Cup, and with the advantage of being in front of a home crowd, along with the much talked about altitude, it should make for a very difficult task for Tuchel’s men.
The question is, though, does this England team have something slightly different about them? Are they going to be able to keep finding a way to advance? If I had to speculate, I would lean yes, but of course, all will be revealed after 12 o’clock today.
