Archie Wilson shares his picks and plays for the semi-final between France and Spain.
A clash of two international titans will open up the semi-final slate of this year’s World Cup, as France take on Spain. The game is set to be nothing short of a barnburner, as when you look at the two squads on paper, they really couldn’t be more opposite in the way their talent is dispersed and the way they have gone about their business. With that said, they are rather evenly matched, and it is going to be an absolute treat watching these two sides do battle.
For Spain, they are coming in as the underdog, and most of that has to do with their attacking deficiencies. While they have done enough in recent games in the attacking third, without Lamine Yamal being able to dominate, it is fair to say they won’t want to get caught up in a track meet with this France team.
Les Bleus are, of course, led by what can only be described as a once-in-a-generation attack, with a rough estimated value of around 850 million pounds between their top six in that department. But if I was to count on two players, those names would be Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise. Mbappe is on track to be the greatest French player of all time and has already been there and done that on the world’s biggest stage. Michael Olise, on the other hand, is a little bit greener in terms of experience, but his quality is undeniable and almost unstoppable when he is in the mood.
I understand this game is between the unstoppable force and the immovable object, but if those two aforementioned names fire, give me France to make it three straight World Cup final berths.
