Archie Wilson shares his picks and plays for the semi-final between England and Argentina.
Thursday morning’s semi-final is a certified doozy between “it’s coming home” and the defending champions. Starting with the latter, Argentina have been far from convincing in this year’s edition of the tournament, but with the leadership of Leo Messi and a bit of help from the likes of Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez, they have managed to squeeze through the knockout stages of the World Cup.
England, on the other hand, have had a slightly more eventful last couple of games and have found themselves in maybe the most promising position the nation has been in since 1966. A lot of that has to do with the heroics of their talismanic midfielder, Jude Bellingham. The 23 year old continues to be the one who answers the bell for England whenever they need saving, and with his brace in the Azteca and against Norway, Bellingham is truly on his way to a Golden Ball if the results keep rolling in.
The rest of England have been a little lacklustre, with the squad leaving the heavy lifting to the likes of Bellingham and his captain, Harry Kane. But the question will be whether Thomas Tuchel can get a tune out of the rest of the squad in Dallas. I think there is a chance that it does happen, but even if it doesn’t, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jude was able to bail them out again.
