A-League Round 15 Preview

Wellington Phoenix
vs
Melbourne City
Friday, 7:00pm | Sky Stadium
SGM | $2.82

It’s the Wellington Phoenix’s 500th game this Friday, and the only outcome I can see is not good for the Nix.

They’ve not beaten Melbourne City since November 2023 and have only won one game in their last seven meetings. The Nix have also failed to score in their last three games versus City.

The stats are heavily against them, and after a 4-1 loss to Newcastle last week, I wouldn’t be touching that result with a 10ft pole.

Melbourne City have been very good at breaking the deadlock, scoring first in five of their last six games. Pair that with over 2.5 total goals, and you have your same game multi.

The Nix can score goals, but they concede plenty. Even if Wellington doesn’t contribute to the score sheet, I think City could clear the total on their own.

  • Melbourne City First Team to Score @ $1.70
  • Over 2.5 Total Goals @ $1.85
Perth Glory
vs
Auckland FC
Saturday, 11:45pm | HBF Park
Auckland FC to Win | $2.00

Auckland FC are hanging on at the top of the table but not by a lot after their 2-2 draw with Central Coast last weekend.

They now head away to play Perth late on Saturday night. When you think of Auckland’s inaugural season, you think of all the good, and they were almost invincible during the regular season. However, when they travelled to Perth last year, they lost 1-0 with a red card…

Neither side has had great form throughout January, but what sticks out to me is the Glory’s struggle against teams closer to the top of the table. At even money, the Black Knights look great value, especially for a team that travels well.

Newcastle (W)
vs
Wellington Phoenix (W)
Sunday, 7:00pm | No. 2 Sportsground
Wellington Phoenix (W) to Win @ $2.00

The women’s Nix side has been flying and sitting second on the ladder, leading the goals scored and goals against categories.

They’ve had some huge wins this year, both home and away, but the last time they met Newcastle, they had a 1-1 draw at Porirua Park. The Jets have been hit or miss all year. They sit seven spots behind the Nix, but only two points separate them on the ladder.

This becomes a huge game for both sides.

Considering the goals for and goals against for the Wellington side, I’m backing them to get the job done over in Newcastle.
