Waitak is in outstanding form this preparation and is looking to complete a Group 1 hat-trick here. He’s produced huge runs over 1600m and 2040m in the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown, winning both the Livamol Classic and the Howden Insurance Mile.
All form indicators point strongly to him again: ideal track conditions, perfect distance range, strong jockey booking, and proven versatility on firmer and softer ground.
Currently paying $3.00 to win and $1.35 to place, he is my best bet of the week.

Midnight Edition is in excellent form this prep, finishing in the top three in all four runs this season. He profiles well to return to winning form here over his preferred 1200m. He has been beaten by race favourite Twain in his last two starts, but I think he’s capable of turning the tables. The draw in barrier 7 is a little tricky for his racing style, and he may need to do some early work, but he likes to lead and should be able to find his position.

The Scunner is in great form this prep with only two runs: a strong fresh-up win followed by a second over 1600m in a Group 3 on this track. He now drops back to his preferred 1400m, where he has produced 4 wins and 1 second, making this distance his sweet spot. He meets some highly rated opposition, but based on his current form and proven record at the trip, I expect him to be right in the mix.

That’s Gold has made a strong start to his preparation, placing third fresh-up, running fifth next start, and most recently winning at Te Aroha by half a length over 1400, finishing powerfully through the line. He draws well in barrier 2 and should settle just off the pace before shifting gears late. He does face horses with stronger Group form, so a win may be a stretch, but he absolutely has the ability to finish inside the top four.
