NPC Round Five

NPC Round Five

The Log o’ Wood is on the move, and we have another shield challenge this weekend with Waikato hosting the Stags.

Canterbury are the only team left undefeated after more upsets took place in round four.

Let’s take a look at the best bets for the weekend’s action of NPC. There are plenty of New Zealand players been released to play for their region so it should be a high-quality weekend!

Waikato
vs
Southland
Sunday, 4:35pm | FMG Stadium
Southland +14.5 | $1.90

Back to back one point wins for Waikato but they’ve got the shield in their mits and have a challenge right off the bat.

The Stags are kind of running hot at the moment, beating the Turbos, then the Steamers… can they carry on their way and snag the shield too?

I’m not sure about a win but I do know they’ll be right up for this and the line is set at 14.5, WAY TOO LARGE in my eyes!

Waikato are winning by the barest of margins and the Stags just knocked off Bay of Plenty who look to be one of the best teams in the comp.

Tasman
vs
Otago
Saturday, 7:10pm | Trafalgar Park
Next Best: Eli Oudenryn | $1.70

This game is going to be a cracker at Trafalgar Park in Nelson.

Eli Oudenryn, the Tasman hooker, was the player of the tournament in the u20 Super Rugby comp earlier in the year. He’s become the first hooker to win the DJ Graham medal (player of the tournament) due to his mauling and accuracy at lineout time.

With this game likely to see plenty of points, I’m expecting the already dominant Tasman lineout drive to continue on its merry way.

Wellington
vs
Auckland
Sunday, 2:05pm | Porirua Park
Value SGM | $4.62

Still winless so far this year, Auckland will be hoping that with some added experience to the squad, they can finally get off the mark.

Neither team has been great on the defensive end, and meetings between these two sides in recent history have been high scoring.

Ruben Love comes back into the fold, taking over from Stanley Solomon, who scored a hat-trick in the 15 jersey last week.

Wellington are the better side and should run the scoreboard up against the struggling Auckland side. They’ve been hot and cold but when they’re hot, they’re hard to stop.

Let’s hope they get hot at Porirua Park this weekend.
