The penultimate round of the Super Rugby regular season is upon us. Three teams have locked in finals footy and three teams are out of contention.
There are some must win games for teams now, so let’s dive in and pick some winners.
Not a lot of value for the Crusaders this week after they nearly put 50 points up in Sydney. For the Highlanders, they deserved the win last week but lost a heartbreaker this game depends on how they respond to that loss.
They’re a team that has shown some fight and grit and will no doubt get a few opportunities to get some points on the board.
The Crusaders though have it all to play for. With two wins to finish the road to lift the trophy will go through Christchurch.
Over 80 minutes, the Saders should be too clinical but I don’t think the Highlanders will roll over.
The Canes were not the Canes last week but they still came away with the win. They should’ve made light work of the Highlanders but we’ll blame that on the covid camp they had the week prior.
The Reds fell to the Brumbies last week and now face the Canes at home as favourites. Home field advantage won’t be enough to help the Reds this weekend, they’ve lost the last nine times they’ve met.
As underdogs, I’m happy to take the Canes at an alternate line for some value.
They’ll be hungry for a win and can jump the Reds with a win. Roigard is playing some of his best footy, Brett Cameron came back and knocked a 50/22 and an extra week of fitness. I don’t see the Canes losing at Suncorp.
The last standing NZ team not to fall to Moana Pasifika. When they met earlier in the season the Chiefs put 50 on them but this time, with so much at stake for both teams I don’t think we’ll see a repeat.
The Chiefs got their warning last week when Moana knocked over the Blues and will know how dangerous Moana can be.
The Chiefs should win this one, but similar to the Highlanders I think this will be closer than people expect. Once again, with their season on the line, Ardie Savea aka ‘Super Rugby Player of the Year’ will show up and bring the physicality.
With him leading the pack, a new wheelie bin in the shed and a lot to play for I back them to keep it close.
The Force are one of the three teams that can’t make the playoffs but they sure can ruin it for the Waratahs. They Force are banged up and limping to the finish line and I doubt they’ll rush those players back.
Without those key players, I think the Tahs can pull off a betting up set here.
